What is professional whitening?

A brighter smile that looks like yours — only better.

Blue-light in-surgery whitening and combined blue-light + tray treatments also available.

Professional teeth whitening uses dentist-prescribed gel and custom-fitted trays to lighten the natural shade of your teeth from the inside — not just remove surface stains. The result is a brighter smile that still looks unmistakably like yours, just refreshed and confident.

Dr. Albert prescribes a clinical-strength gel that's up to thirty times stronger than anything available over the counter, in trays moulded to your exact bite for even, comfortable results. It's the kind of whitening that quietly works while you sleep, and lasts.

Three myths the industry sells

Most "whitening" doesn't whiten.

A short, plainly-spoken correction of the three claims that disappoint patients most often.

01

Blue-light whitening on its own works in one session.

On its own, it doesn't. Much of what you see straight afterwards is dehydration — your teeth dry out under the lamp, then rehydrate over the next couple of days and the brightness fades. The gel does real work, but it needs time. That's why we always recommend combining a blue-light session with custom at-home trays: the session gives you the initial boost, the trays and gel seal the result.

02

Strips and high-street kits whiten teeth.

They lift surface stains slightly, but the gel concentration (around 0.16%) is too weak to change the actual shade of your teeth. That requires 10–16% prescription gel — and a custom tray to hold it against the tooth.

03

Whitening damages your enamel.

Carbamide peroxide whitening, when prescribed and supervised, has been studied for over 30 years and shown to be safe for enamel at the concentrations we use. The "damage" myth comes from over-the-counter abuse and unsupervised treatments.

The science, simply

Why prescription gel is the only thing that actually changes the colour of your teeth.

There are two kinds of staining. Extrinsic stains sit on the outside of the tooth — coffee, tea, wine, smoke. A good hygienist visit removes most of these in 30 minutes.

Intrinsic staining is different. It lives inside the tooth — built up over years from food, age, and sometimes medication. No toothpaste, no strip, no scraping can reach it.

The only thing that can is hydrogen peroxide (or its slow-release cousin, carbamide peroxide). It penetrates the enamel, breaks down the chromophore molecules that make teeth look yellow, and lifts the colour from within.

That chemistry only works at clinical concentration — around 10–16% — and only when the gel is held against the tooth long enough for it to penetrate. Which is why custom-fit trays + dentist-prescribed gel works, and 5-minute strips don't.

Where the difference lives

Three categories, one that works.

The whitening "market" is really three very different things. Only one is built around the science of how teeth actually whiten — and lasts.

Your at-home journey

14 days, on your schedule.

Whitening happens at home, in your own time. Here's roughly how it unfolds for most patients — gradual, gentle, and easy to track.

  1. Day 1
    Trays delivered

You collect your custom-fit trays and a course of dentist-prescribed gel.

  2. Day 3
    First lift

A subtle but noticeable brightening — the deeper colour change starts to emerge.

  3. Day 7
    Visible shift

    2–3 shades brighter. Stains lifting.

  4. Day 14
    Full target

Most patients reach their natural target shade — bright, even, and unmistakably refreshed.

  5. Day 28+
    Locked in

Brightness stabilises. Top up monthly, quarterly, or whenever you want a refresh — your trays are yours to keep.

The detail you'll want

Everything you've ever wondered about whitening.

Whitening is the most-asked-about treatment in cosmetic dentistry, and it's the one most clouded by myth. We've answered every question we hear in the clinic, plainly and properly.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Dentist-prescribed whitening is one of the most researched and safest cosmetic dental treatments available. We use a clinical-strength gel applied in custom trays — and, where it helps, professional in-clinic blue light sessions — completely different from over-the-counter strips or unregulated salon treatments.

How white will my teeth get?

Most patients achieve 4–8 shades lighter. We aim for a natural-looking brightness that suits your face — never the artificial, over-bleached look.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Most patients do notice some sensitivity during the treatment — this is completely normal and fades within a couple of days of finishing. It's usually well managed and easily tolerated with a sensitivity toothpaste and the right whitening protocol, which we tailor to you.

Should I have in-surgery "blue light" whitening or home whitening?

We offer both. On its own, we only really recommend a one-off blue-light session if you need a quick boost for something the next day — a wedding, a birthday, a shoot. Even then we would suggest pairing it with custom trays: for £100 more than the in-surgery session alone, you get a result that lasts years rather than days. The light gives you the immediate lift; the trays and prescription gel do the lasting work.

How long do results last?

Typically 1–3 years depending on your diet, habits, and whether you smoke or drink coffee, tea or red wine. Top-up gel for your existing trays is inexpensive and simple to use whenever you want a refresh.

What about whitening toothpaste and strips?

Over-the-counter products can only remove surface stains. Professional whitening uses a gel that's up to 30 times stronger and physically lifts the colour of the tooth from within — a fundamentally different and much more effective process.

Should I whiten before veneers or bonding?

Yes — almost always. Whitening only works on natural enamel, so we whiten first to set your shade, then design any bonding or veneers to match. The result is a beautifully unified smile.

I have fillings or crowns — will they whiten too?

No — whitening only lifts the colour of your natural enamel, so existing fillings, crowns and veneers won't change shade. Because of this, many patients choose to whiten first and then have any fillings or crowns on their front teeth replaced to match their brighter smile. Restorations on the back teeth are rarely visible and are usually perfectly fine to leave as they are.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

Bespoke home whitening is from £349 (trays + a course of gel). Top-up gel from £45. 0% finance available if combining with bonding or veneers.
