Lower running costs (labour, lab and overheads) genuinely make dentistry abroad cheaper, and there are skilled dentists working in Turkey and elsewhere. But part of the price gap is also down to what’s actually done: many low-cost overseas packages fit crowns rather than veneers, treat a whole mouth in a single short trip, and don’t include long-term aftercare — all of which changes both the cost and what happens to your teeth. The upfront figure and the true long-term cost aren’t always the same thing.

Often they’re crowns, not veneers — and it’s an important distinction. A veneer covers the front of the tooth and needs only a thin layer of enamel prepared. A crown wraps the whole tooth and needs far more of it removed, sometimes filed down to a small “peg”. Many people who ask for veneers abroad are actually given crowns, frequently on otherwise healthy teeth. That’s a much more invasive, permanent change — so it’s always worth asking, clearly, whether you’re being offered veneers or crowns.

There are good, conscientious dentists in Turkey and around the world, so this isn’t about nationality. The honest risks are more practical: regulation, consent and your ability to seek recourse differ from the UK; very compressed timelines can mean less conservative planning; and aftercare is difficult to arrange once you’re home. If you do consider treatment abroad, the key is to judge the clinician and the plan — how much tooth is being removed, whether it’s veneers or crowns, and who looks after you afterwards — rather than the price alone.

This is the part that catches people out. If a veneer or crown chips, an edge leaks, the bite feels wrong, or a tooth becomes sensitive, going back to the original clinic usually isn’t practical.
