Not all “whitening” is the same, which is why prices vary so much. The main options:
Dentist-prescribed home whitening
Custom-fitted trays and a course of prescription-strength gel you use at home over 2–4 weeks. Gentle, effective and controllable — our approach, from £349.
Laser (in-chair) whitening
A one-visit treatment done in the practice — from £595. An instant improvement, ideal before a wedding or event. For longer-lasting results, though, the combination or at-home approach is preferred.
Combination whitening
Laser for an immediate lift, then custom trays and gel to deepen and lock in the result — from £695. The best of both: fast and lasting.
Shop & online kits
Cheap, but legally limited to a very weak gel, so results are minimal — and poorly fitting trays can irritate gums.
Salon / DIY whitening
Illegal if performed by a non-dentist, and potentially harmful — often using unregulated, non-science-based products. Best avoided entirely.
Why the cheapest option can cost you more
In the UK, only GDC-registered dental professionals may legally whiten teeth, and any gel stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide must be supplied through a dentist. That rule exists for a reason: whitening done by untrained providers, or with unregulated products, can burn gums and leave patchy, disappointing results that then cost more to put right. Paying a little more for dentist-supervised whitening buys you safety, a stronger regulated gel, custom trays, and a shade that’s even and lasting.
How long will it last?
Most people keep their brighter shade for 12 months or more, depending on how much coffee, tea, red wine and other staining foods feature in their week. Because you keep your custom trays, topping up is simple and inexpensive — from £45 for more gel — so you can keep it bright indefinitely without ever starting over.

How much does teeth whitening cost at the dentist in the UK?
Professional teeth whitening in the UK typically costs £250–£700, depending on the method. Dentist-prescribed take-home whitening (custom trays and gel) usually falls around £250–£400, while in-chair or laser whitening at other practices tends to be £400–£700. At our Windsor practice, bespoke home whitening is from £349, with top-up gel from £45.
Why is professional whitening worth it over a cheap kit?
Shop and online kits are legally limited to a very low concentration of whitening agent, so results are minimal, and ill-fitting trays can cause gum irritation and uneven shade. A dentist takes impressions for custom-fitted trays and prescribes a stronger, regulated gel — safer, more comfortable and far more effective.
Is salon or DIY teeth whitening legal?
Only GDC-registered dental professionals may legally whiten teeth in the UK, and products above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be supplied through a dentist. Whitening carried out by a non-dentist (for example in a beauty salon) is illegal and can damage your gums and teeth. Choosing a dentist is the safe and legal route.
Can under-18s have their teeth whitened?
Cosmetic tooth whitening is only carried out on adults — you need to be 18 or over. In rare cases, whitening may be used for a genuine dental health reason (for example, a single tooth discoloured after trauma), but for under-18s that is the exception rather than the rule, and always at the dentist’s discretion.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Whitening comfortably lasts 12 months or more, and because you keep your custom trays you can maintain the shade indefinitely with occasional top-up gel (from £45) — no need to start again. How long it stays brightest depends on your diet and lifestyle.
Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
Used correctly under a dentist’s supervision, professional whitening does not damage enamel — it works by lifting stains within the tooth, not by removing surface. Some people notice temporary sensitivity that settles within a day or two. The bigger risks come from unregulated products and untrained providers.
Should I whiten before composite bonding or veneers?
Yes — if you do want your teeth whiter, we’d always recommend whitening first. Composite and porcelain are colour-matched to your teeth and cannot be whitened later, so whitening beforehand means your bonding or veneers are matched to your brightest natural shade.
